2025 CLASSIC SERIES – LAY LAKE EVENT
WOW!!! What a great start to our 2025 season down on Lay Lake. After arriving on the Thursday, February 20, 2025 and dropping off our weigh-in trailer at Beeswax Creek Boat Ramp, our staff headed over to The Local Oyster House in Columbiana for dinner. Great little place with very friendly staff and very tasty food too. After dinner we arrived back at The Cabins on Lay Lake for a peaceful start to a very cold weekend. Let's give a SHOUTOUT to The Cabins on Lay Lake at Beeswax too. Very nice place to stay, with an easy reservation setup and the owner was very nice to work with throughout the entire process. We had two cabins and everyone was pleased. A Friday morning wakeup to NO ALARM clock was a nice touch, but we went straight to work setup TKPro software with our tournament entries and all of our normal tournament setup, while enjoying a cup of coffee in our beautiful cabin. A few others slept in a little later, but when they woke up, we headed out for breakfast. Found Davis Drug Snack Bar, while we all enjoyed our breakfast. I'd recommended the omelets, they were great! We also got a few good personal deals on some Coosa Cotton apparel.
Our Friday night meal/message/meeting was at a local church we LOVE going too. Antioch Baptist Church is one of our favorite stops on our schedule. Pastor Phillip is a great guy and the church members are so sweet. They have hosted our event every year and provide some great food every time! The room was filled with fun fellowship and registration went off without a hitch. Even though the food and fellowship were good, the message our new Chaplin, Eric Schavey had was truly straight from God and touch a lot of participants. Two rededications and several prayer requests were noted from the almost 100 in attendance before we rolled right into our meeting. We had one angler take a nasty fall in the boat practicing today, and was not able to attend. His partner was very concern and felt a hospital visit was needed. Making sure to add him to our prayer request, to ensure a quick healing. Everything went so smooth, we were finished and leaving before 7:30pm. Everyone was able to get back to their accommodations pretty early for a good night’s rest.
Saturday morning wakeup call about our angler that fell, was no surprise to hear they had been at the hospital all night. After removing the team found the lineup, we prayed several times in hope to hear some good reports later. After arriving at Beeswax Boat Ramp, and getting all of out morning equipment out of the trailer, we headed to the pier to find it covered in ice. Onsite temperatures had fallen down to around 28 degrees, made it for a cold day in Alabama. Slowly making our way out, we were able to setup and start our morning festivities to include our “On the Water” devotion, prayer and National Anthem we do at every event. After our anthem, we started sending 31 boats off one by one as we checked live-wells as they idled by the pier. Everything was captured by a Facebook LIVE feed and even some drone footages of boat heading out. After the last boat had headed off into the sunrise, we head out for breakfast and back to our cabin to finalize our tournament paperwork.
After a great lunch at Tin Top BBQ, we enjoyed a walk around a family friendly event called “Columbiana’s Cowboy Day” festival to even include a real western shoot out on main street. There is video on our Facebook page. As a director, I was thinking that could be a great way to settle a tie if one was to happen during the weigh-in. After the good food and fun festival, it was time to go setup for our weigh-in. Even though it was cold, setup went well and we were ready to start our weigh-in. Cold anglers started coming earlier to get on the board. After having network issues with our LIVE feed, we decided to just video and post later. Go to our FB Page
and check out the video. Weigh-in didn’t take long with only 31 boats and the cold weather did look like it was helping with the fish catch. Lots of the first flight team were struggling to even produce 5 fish limits. Finally, after several teams weighed in, our Male/Female Team of Kyle & Leslie Scheer was able to set the Big Fish weight to 5.31 hoping to land the $406 Big Fish payout. Eventually it was over taken, but they did manage to hold on our M/F Bonus in the end. The first flight team of Gary Thompson & Terry Wallace set the pace with a 15.98 bag. It was enough, at the end of the weigh-in for them to get the 6th Place check. It didn’t take long for the first flight adult/youth team of Jimmy Mitchell - Brody Mitchell to set it even higher with locking the scales in at 17.14. By the that time the second flight was in and the weights started climbing. First team out in the second flight of Team George Crain & Allan Glasgow fell a little short with a 16.02 bag. However, it was enough to get them a 5th Place check at the end of the day. Once the big ones started rolling in, the bar was rising with every team weighing in with the Team of Jake Childers & Gabriel Clark nailing down our 1st Place & 1st Bonus Bucks with a 22.22 sack! The Team of Jay Hopper & Braxton Hopper wasn’t too far behind getting the 2nd Place & 2nd Bonus Bucks with a locked in bag of 21.61, thanks to a Big Fish of 6.36. That was a nice $406 check added to their pocket. When scales finally closed, the Adult/Youth Mitchell Team locked in 3rd Place & 3rd Bonus Bucks. 4th Place was held by the Team of Tristan Smith & Darrell Smith with their 16.77 bag to seal the final results.

- No fishing within 100 yards of the ramp on tournament day after 1PM
PERMITTED FISHING AREA: All water accessible by waters from the official launch site
BLAST-OFF PROCEDURES: Blast-off will be conducted from pier
LIVE-WELL CHECKS: Live-well checks during Blast-off by boat numbers
