Roles reversed on Day Two as Jay Grogan and Ryan Ingram snatched the lead from Bradley Enfinger and Brandon Ingram in the last few minutes of the weigh-in. On day one, Bradley and Brandon did the very same thing, taking the lead from Jay and Ryan as the final flight weighed in.
In the end, Bradley and Brandon took a 2.55-pound lead, and never looked back, finishing two days of fishing with 45.46 pounds of chunky healthy fish.
Before weighing in on the 2nd day, they were really concerned that they had left some fish on day one so they could go back to them on the third day if they needed to. Had they known the third day would get cancelled, they might have stayed on some of their spots and tried to cull up a few more pounds.
Ryan explained that they caught most of their fish on ½ oz BrushBuster Jigs and 1 oz LedgeBuster spinnerbaits. On day one it was evenly split between the two, but on the 2nd day, the spinnerbait bite went cold, and the jig was the hero bait.
They fished primarily on the far south end of the lake. They successfully targeted brush piles about 20 foot deep that were situated on creek ledges, river ledges, and at the end of ditches. Their strategy of running south was to get into less fished water.
They were catching both pre-spawn and post-spawn fish which seemed unusual. Ryan thinks there was an early spawn that occurred when the unseasonably warm weather set in late in December and into January. The post-spawners were more prevalent downstream than the pre-spawners, but they were also less pressured.
They reported catching 15-20 fish per day. On day one they only had two keepers in the boat around midday, so most of theirs came later in the day. Ryan set the hook on a heavy one late in the day, she came to the surface, rolled, and set herself free. The boat went quiet for a few minutes, and they were very concerned that it was the fish that might cost them the tournament.
They were fortunate that it didn’t cost them, and they were able to improve over the first day bag by 3.50-pounds. Jay and Ryan were rewarded for their efforts with the keys to a brand new 2022 BassCat Cougar powered by a Mercury 250 Pro XS.
The 2nd BassCat, a 2022 Bobcat, rigged out for a Mercury 150 Pro XS, went to Day 1 leaders, Bradley Enfinger and Brandon Ingram. Like many teams that were bagging 18-20 pounds of fish each day, they couldn’t help but think they could have regained the 1st place lead if they had been able to fish the 3rd day, which was cancelled due to a high-profile severe weather system.
Fishing is reasonably predictable but catching isn’t necessarily so. After the emotions of it settled down, they were somewhat content with fishing just two days and taking home a beautiful new BassCat.
Looking at their impressive two-day total of 42.91-pounds, it was very noticeable that they fell short of their day one weight by just over 3-pounds, which allowed the winners to nudge them out. It was a strong enough finish, however, to hold off third place finishers, Justen & Ty Fain, who also had their better day on day one.
Bradley and Brandon fished very similar to Jay and Ryan, fishing the southern end of the pound, targeting brush piles in relatively deep water. Their choice of baits went somewhat old-school, however, using a large 10” Texas rigged plastic worm, and chunky, 8-inch lizards. Their game plan was to hit as many potential brush piles as possible, hoping to pick off the largest fish on the pile using electronics technology, and then running to the next pile.
Bradley and Brandon also lost a very big fish. Brandon hoisted a fish all the way to the side of the boat, just to watch her do a couple of headshakes and simply sling the hook. He said when the fish broke the surface she had eyes as big as plums and a mouth that looked like she could swallow a basketball. They felt certain she would have gone 7 pounds and feel like it was ‘the’ fish that cost them the win.
When asked how they moved beyond the emotions of losing such a big fish, he smiled and said, “by catching a 5-pounder four casts later off of the very same brush pile!!”
Overall, it was a strong event with 95% of the 193 teams weighing fish. Almost 1,400 fish came to the scales and the average weight of all weighed was 2.45 Pounds. The 193-team event sets a record for post-season participation. A very nice way to celebrate Fishers of Men’s 25th Silver Anniversary. On top of the two BassCat/Mercury prize boats, cash prizes in excess of $66,000 dollars were paid out to 45 of the teams that competed.
